Art, Emergence, and Radical Love

Grantmaking

about the project

Commissioned by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation’s Performing Arts Program, Kimzin Creative and On the Margins led a community-rooted process to reimagine arts funding in Sonoma County.

In deep collaboration with eight local artists—known as the Asesores—we co-designed a grantmaking roadmap to equitably distribute $500,000 in direct funding to artists and culture workers who have been historically and systematically oppressed.

This two-year initiative aims to support over 1,000 BIPOC and Queer artists across four priority areas: (1) economic relief, (2) space, (3) education, and (4) health & wellness. The grant program includes (10) $30,000 artist grants and at least 15 community events, including monthly gatherings, quarterly professional development workshops, and two annual health & wellness fairs.

This work reflects a bold vision for cultural equity, designed by artists, for artists. Read the full report here.
